2020 – Riverside, California
After immigrating from Egypt at a young age, Matthew Gayed grew up in the quaint town of Riverside, California. Matthew graduated as valedictorian from John W. North High School in Riverside. Matthew also received his IB diploma from North.
In high school, Matthew was part of the varsity swim team and president and founder of North’s Beautification Club. He was involved with Origami club, Key Club, and The North Star Online newspaper.
Matthew is interested in all things science, and wants to look more closely at the cross section of science and ethics. As for a major, he is still unsure. On campus, Matthew participated in the Genetics and Genomics Focus cluster during his first semester. He is currently a member of Duke Honor Council, a writer for the Duke Chronicle, and is involved in other clubs on campus. Matthew hopes to get involved in research and in the Durham community.
For Matthew, the Reggie program has provided a family on campus. Matthew is inspired with how much the Reggies have and will accomplish, and hopes to represent the group positively.
